The Atlantic Coast HUB of the Coimbra region, part of the "Hub Azul Portugal" network, was presented on 16th April at the Figueira da Foz City Hall. The initiative, which aims to develop a strategic programme focused on the maritime economy, will receive around €18.3 million in funding from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).

The consortium includes the University of Coimbra (UC), the Coimbra Intermunicipal Community (CIM), the Figueira da Foz Business Incubator (IEFF), SeaPower (Technology and Innovation Centre), the Figueira da Foz Port Authority (APFF), the Figueira da Foz Chamber of Commerce (ACIFF) and the municipalities of Figueira da Foz, Mira and Cantanhede.

Nuno Mendonça, Vice Rector for Innovation, Business Relations and Employability at the UC, explained that the HUB aims to create a networked ecosystem to attract new companies and human resources to the region by leveraging scientific and technical expertise. The project also aims to strengthen the infrastructure for education, research, innovation and entrepreneurship, promoting a decarbonised, sustainable and technological blue economy.

The Rector of the University of Coimbra, Amílcar Falcão, highlighted the University's role in empowering people, conducting research, promoting innovation and strengthening the HUB. The Mayor of Figueira da Foz, Pedro Santana Lopes, underlined the importance of the UC's involvement, stating that universities are essential in leading the region towards new discoveries.

The Secretary of State for Maritime Affairs, Lídia Bulcão, praised the collaboration, stating that this union strengthens the region. She also announced that the Atlantic Coast Hub will receive funding as part of the national Hub Azul Portugal network, further increasing the impact of the project.

The Atlantic Coast HUB, recently included in the EU Mission for the Recovery of Our Oceans and Waters, has been recognised for its significant contribution to the mission's objectives and will receive specialised technical support in the commercial, operational and financial areas.
