Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur, gives lecture on international law and Palestine at FEUC
The event takes place on 4 October at 14:30 in the FEUC Auditorium.
On 4th October, the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (FEUC) will host Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, for a public lecture entitled "Palestine: the tomb of international law?"
The initiative, promoted by FEUC's International Relations Department, marks the inaugural conference of the recently established Luís Moita Chair in Peace and International Relations and is part of the celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the International Relations PhD Programme - International Politics and Conflict Resolution.
Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine since 2022, is a renowned lawyer and expert on issues related to Palestinian refugees, considered the longest-running refugee crisis since World War II. Albanese has published extensively on the legal framework surrounding the Israel/Palestine issue, and her latest work, Palestinian Refugees in International Law (Oxford University Press, 2020), is an in-depth analysis of the situation of Palestinian refugees from their origins to the present day.
The current humanitarian and human rights crisis in the region, triggered by the Israeli military incursion into the Gaza Strip in response to a Hamas terrorist attack on Israeli territory, makes this conference all the more relevant. This is a crucial moment to reflect on the importance of human rights and international law, including international humanitarian law, at a time when these principles are being openly challenged on the global stage.
The conference will take place at 14.30 in the FEUC auditorium.
