JJ Pedroso de Lima Prize awarded to PhD student Alexandra Fonseca
The winning project focuses on the development of radiopharmaceuticals for the diagnosis and treatment of various oncological diseases.
Alexandra Fonseca, a PhD student in pharmaceutical chemistry, has won the inaugural JJ Pedroso de Lima Prize. This prize was created by the Institute of Nuclear Sciences Applied to Health (ICNAS) of the University of Coimbra (UC) in honour of João José Pedroso de Lima (1934-2016), an "outstanding physicist and full professor", for his exceptional contribution to nuclear sciences applied to health. The prize, worth 10,000 euros, was presented on Wednesday, the 11th, at a ceremony held in the Senate Hall.
Established this year, the JJ Pedroso de Lima Prize aims to annually recognise students, teachers, or researchers with a background in fundamental sciences and engineering who have distinguished themselves through relevant projects in nuclear sciences applied to health.
The award was presented by the Rector of the UC, Amílcar Falcão, and the Director of ICNAS, Antero Abrunhosa, who both praised Alexandra Fonseca's work.
"It is with great pleasure that we present for the first time the JJ Pedroso de Lima Award, honouring a man of remarkable vision who played a key role in the creation and early development of ICNAS. The work honoured in this inaugural edition was unanimously approved, with the jury highlighting its clinical relevance and potential benefit to the community," said the Rector, who chaired the jury that awarded the prize.
"I am very pleased that the prize has been awarded to a young researcher, a PhD student, whose work shows the highest merit and potential clinical application in oncology," added the Director of ICNAS.
