New undergraduate degree and two master's programmes at the University of Coimbra Campus in Figueira da Foz
The UC campus in Figueira da Foz will now offer a degree in Marine Biology and Master’s programmes in Artificial Intelligence and Music Computing and Sound Design.
After hosting more than a dozen short and postgraduate courses since it opened in December 2022, the University of Coimbra Campus at Figueira da (CUCFF) will offer its first undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the 2024/25 academic year: a Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology and two Master's degrees: Artificial Intelligence and Music Computing and Sound Design.
These new degrees not only broaden the University of Coimbra's (UC) educational offer in emerging areas, but also extend it to a new geographical area, Figueira da Foz, "placing this city in a central and dynamic axis, not only for the University of Coimbra, but also for the entire Centre region," points out Miguel Pardal, academic coordinator of CUCFF.
The new Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology, launched within the Department of Life Sciences (DCV) of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, is a significant milestone. According to the full professor, this programme underlines the strategic importance of the sea, both for the University of Coimbra (UC) and for the entire Centre region. "UC is now one of the few national higher education institutions offering a marine biology degree. This new programme represents a strategic commitment to our new campus in Figueira da Foz and aims to strengthen territorial cohesion and promote the development of the Centre region," he emphasises.
CUCFF's first undergraduate degree will offer an innovative and interdisciplinary curriculum that integrates biology, ecology, management of biological resources, pollution, aquaculture, climate change, and conservation, with additional courses in law and economics. The programme will offer 40 places per year.
At the same time, the Department of Informatics Engineering (DEI-FCTUC) is launching two new master's programmes: Artificial Intelligence and Music Computing and Sound Design. Each programme will offer 20 places per year.
The new courses will be held at Quinta das Olaias and in the restored facilities of the old Figueira da Foz bus station, which are being converted into laboratories for the practical training of the BSc in Marine Biology.
