After Israel declared UN Secretary-General António Guterres persona non grata, the Rector of the University of Coimbra (UC), Amílcar Falcão, wrote a letter expressing the UC's support for the UN's work.

Amílcar Falcão stated that "at a time when the role of the Secretary-General in promoting dialogue between the two states (Israel and Palestine) is more important than ever, Israel's decision seriously undermines the UN's ability to mediate in the conflict".

"This is a critical moment that requires the entire international community to rally around the UN to find a diplomatic solution for the lasting peace we all desire," he stressed.

In this message, Amílcar Falcão also expressed to António Guterres - who received the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Coimbra in 2016 and the UC Prize in 2022 - "the support, commitment and solidarity of the University of Coimbra for his efforts to alert humanity to the tragedy we are all facing on another level: climate change."
