The Senate is an advisory body that assists the Rector in the management of the University of Coimbra (UC), particularly in coordinating scientific research activities, delivering educational programmes, promoting development and innovation, ensuring quality management and facilitating teacher and student mobility within the University. It also oversees international relations and manages the institution's financial resources and infrastructure.
The Senate is chaired by the Rector and includes the Directors of all organisational units, one student representative from each teaching and research unit, and two representatives of the technical staff. The term of office of the elected members is two years, renewable.
The General Council consists of 35 members: eighteen representatives from the teaching and research staff, five student representatives, two representatives from the non-teaching and non-research staff, and ten distinguished external members of recognised merit from outside the University of Coimbra. All members serve a four-year term, renewable once, except for the student representatives, who have a two-year term.
The General Council's responsibilities include electing the Rector (and, if necessary, replacing, suspending, or dismissing the Rector in cases of serious concern to the University), evaluating the actions of the Rector and the Executive Board, proposing initiatives deemed essential for the effective functioning of the University, and approving amendments to the University's Statutes after consultation with the Senate.
