UC is once again participating in SDG Flag Day, reinforcing its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda

For the second consecutive year, UC has joined the SDG Flag Day, responding to the challenge proposed by the UN Global Compact and celebrating nine years since the world embraced the Sustainable Development Goals together with thousands of companies, NGOs, educational organisations and government institutions around the world.

In this edition, the flag was raised on various days and at different times, starting at the Universo UC event: showcase of services, projects and initiative during the Welcome and Integration Week. It accompanied the initiatives carried by the Office for Sustainable Development (GDS.UC), that aimed to encourage more sustainable individual habits, in support of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Although primarily focused on new students, this initiative challenged the entire academic community to make a public commitment to one of the SDGs to be developed in their daily lives.

The flag is also being displayed during the panels included in the UC Sustainability Days on the 24th, 25th and 26th of September. These panels, which are open and free to both the academic community and the general public, aim to exchange knowledge and develop essential skills that contribute to the adoption of more responsible and sustainable practices. In this way, the GDS.UC aims to bring the flag to the three Poles of the University of Coimbra.

The SDG FLAG DAY campaign began in the Netherlands in 2020 and curently brings together hundreds of companies, government departments, civil society organisations and schools, who raise the flag every year to show that they are part of this global movement for a better world. In 2023 the initiative involved more than 1,500 entities.

By raising the SDGs flag, the organisations reinforce their firm commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the actions they are already taking to help solve the main global challenges, including combating climate change, poverty and hunger, as well as promoting decent work, innovation and sustainable infrastructure.
