UC is the leading national institution in most areas evaluated in 'THE World University Rankings by Subject'
The ranking places the University of Coimbra among the world’s top 125 universities for Law (ranked 101-125) and in the top 200 globally for Arts and Humanities (ranked 151-175).
The University of Coimbra (UC) has once again stood out in the prestigious THE World University Rankings by Subject, which annually ranks the world’s top higher education institutions across various scientific fields. UC has been recognised as the best national university in six of the 11 subject areas assessed in the 2025 edition, published today (22nd) by theTimes Higher Education (THE), up from five areas in the previous edition.
The ranking highlights the University of Coimbra as one of the top 125 universities in the world for Law (ranked 101-125) and also places it among the top 200 globally in Arts and Humanities (ranked 151-175). In addition to these two categories, where UC stands out as a leading national institution, it also shares national leadership in Psychology (ranked 201-250), Social Sciences (ranked 251-300), Life Sciences (ranked 301-400), and Physical Sciences (ranked 401-500).
In the remaining areas assessed in the 'THE World University Rankings by Subject', the University of Coimbra further consolidated its position among the best in the world: Education in the global top 250 (position 201-250), Business and Economics, and Health and Medicine in the top 400 (both in positions 301-400), Engineering in the top 500 (position 401-500), and Computer Science in the top 600 (position 501-600).
For these rankings, the Times Higher Education (THE) evaluates various performance indicators such as teaching, research, knowledge transfer and internationalisation.
In the 2025 edition, US and UK universities top the tables in all 11 subject rankings, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University (USA) leading in three subject areas each and the University of Oxford (UK) taking the top spot in two.
