The University of Coimbra (UC) joins the celebration of World Metrology Day in partnership with the Portuguese Institute for Quality (IPQ). This year marks a historic milestone — the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention.

The convention, signed in Paris on 20 May 1875, marked the beginning of international cooperation in metrology. It laid the foundations for the modern-day International System of Units (SI), which is essential for ensuring consistent and reliable measurements worldwide. Since then, metrology has played a crucial role in scientific, technological and social progress.

To celebrate this milestone, the University of Coimbra (UC) will host an Open Lecture on 22 May 2025 at 2:30 pm, titled '150 Years of the Metre Convention' and exploring the theme 'Measurements for all times, for all people'. The session will take place in the Laginha Serafim Auditorium at the Department of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra.

The event is open to the academic community and the general public, and aims to highlight the importance of accurate, universal and accessible measurement systems, which are vital across a wide range of fields, including trade, science, public health and climate change.

Admission is free, but registration is required by 19 May 2025 via the following form: https://www.uc.pt/ucbusiness/formulario-de-inscricao-aula-aberta/
