The University of Coimbra (UC), a partner organisation in I3-4-SEAWEED, hosted the official kick-off meeting of this European project.

I3-4-SEAWEED, led by the F6S EU Tech Innovation Network Designated Activity Company, brings together 16 partners from six European countries.

The main objective of this research and innovation project is to harness the strengths of innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), universities, technology centres and industrial clusters to promote a transnational value-added chain based on new sustainable techniques for cultivating seaweed and its various biotechnological applications.

The research conducted by the UC focuses on the development of cosmetic products based on seaweed, in collaboration with the Algaplus company. The UC team is made up of researchers from different faculties and research centres: Leonel Pereira (Department of Life Sciences of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology), Célia Cabral (Faculty of Medicine), Ana Cláudia Santos (Faculty of Pharmacy), Teresa Rosete (Faculty of Pharmacy), Cláudia Pereira (Faculty of Medicine), Paulo Oliveira (Centre for Neurosciences and Cell Biology and Centre for Innovation in Biomedicine and Biotechnology), Francisco Veiga (Faculty of Pharmacy), Miguel Pardal (Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Sciences and Technology) and António Xavier Coutinho (Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Sciences and Technology).

This is one of the two University of Coimbra projects funded by the Investment in Interregional Innovation Instruments (I3) initiative.
