UC students simulate United Nations General Assembly
The 2nd edition of the UC MUN—UN Model at the University of Coimbra brought together 171 students to debate "Climate Change: Challenges and Solutions in Times of Humanitarian Crisis."
Climate Change: Challenges and Solutions in Times of Humanitarian Crisis' is the theme of the 2nd edition of UC MUN - UN Model at the University of Coimbra. 171 students from the University of Coimbra (UC) have gathered to take part in a guided simulation of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly at the UC Rectory Auditorium.
"This is a transformative experience that goes beyond any extracurricular activity," says UC MUN Secretary General George Biancardini. UC MUN is "an opportunity to explore the world of diplomacy" in "the highest deliberative body of the UN - the General Assembly". Given the "urgent need to train young people who are committed to change", the organisation of UC MUN has "taken on the mission of preparing delegates, not only for the simulation, but for the growth of these young actors in society". George Biancardini concludes with an appeal: "Be active, participate and stand up for your positions with conviction, that's the only way to create a committee of excellence".
The second edition of UC MUN saw an increase of 70 participants, which "means that our students are engaged, interested individuals who are not indifferent to what is happening in the world," says Cristina Albuquerque, the University of Coimbra's Vice-Rector for Education and Student Outreach. She praises the initiative for "strengthening the skills that higher education itself seeks to implement and consolidate: cooperation and argumentation, both fundamental elements for building peace."
"Take this very seriously," advises the Secretary-General of the United Nations Association in Portugal, Mário Parra da Silva. "What you do here will resonate far and wide; the opportunity is yours." UC MUN "addresses problems directly at the best possible source - young people - at a time when they are still studying and therefore have time to reflect on global issues and prepare for the real world". Mário Parra da Silva points out that according to statistics, "the percentage of people who occupy international positions, whether in politics, business or associations, who have experienced such an event is overwhelming.
Vice President of the General Directorate of the Academic Association of Coimbra (AAC), José Machado, says: "These will be three days of debate, learning, and discussion on key issues such as the humanitarian crisis and climate change, at a time when we are witnessing a world in constant flux."
UC MUN aims to contribute to participants' awareness, education, and training in international relations, diplomacy, and international law, while also developing their public speaking, argumentation, writing, and research skills. To provide an immersive experience, the event places students in the roles of members of the General Assembly Bureau, rapporteurs, and representatives of member states, world organisations, and the media, similar to what happens at the UN.
