The University of Coimbra (UC) has just been recognised as one of the pioneering universities in promoting gender equality in the Mediterranean region, specifically for its initiatives to enhance women's representation and create equitable working environments.

The award was presented by the Mediterranean Universities Gender Equality Pioneers initiative, in partnership with the Mediterranean Researchers' Night [MEDNIGHT] and the European Women Rectors Association [EWRA]. It recognises universities for their innovative initiatives to promote gender equality and for serving as models in advancing gender equality in academia.

"This award makes us very proud, as it highlights the impact of the many initiatives that the University of Coimbra has undertaken to promote gender equality and endure a fair and dignified working environment, including policies on work-life balance and measures to combat harassment, as outlined in the UC Equality, Equity and Diversity Plan. The UC has also implemented various projects, such as Equality Days, Equal.STEAM – Integrated Programme for Attracting and Retaining Girls and Women in Higher Education in Technology and Engineering, and Gender@UC. The commitment to non-discrimination, inclusion, equality and equity is one of the core principles of the University of Coimbra," stated Cristina Albuquerque, Vice Rector of the University of Coimbra for Teaching and Student Affairs.

The award ceremony took place this afternoon, 14 March, in Brussels. The Universitat Jaume I (Spain) and the Università Aldo Moro di Bari (Italy) were also distinguished.
