The University of Coimbra (UC) has once again been recognised as one of the top 500 universities in the world in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE WUR). In the 2025 edition, released today, UC has reached the top of the global rankings.

The results place the University of Coimbra in the 401-500 range, among the 2,092 higher education institutions analysed globally. The UC tops the list in Portugal, alongside the University of Lisbon and the University of Porto.

The University of Coimbra performed particularly well in the Research Environment category, achieving a global ranking of 249th and a 29-place improvement compared to the previous edition. The performance in this category was evaluated based on metrics related to scientific productivity, research income, and research reputation.

"To be ranked once again among the top 500 universities in the world confirms our strategy of consolidation and continued commitment to research, which is recognised in various international rankings, including the two announced today: THE WUR 2025 and the CWTS Leiden Ranking Open Edition 2024. These rankings place UC as the 90th best university in Europe and the 319th best university in the world in terms of scientific production," said UC Rector Amílcar Falcão.

The 2025 World University Rankings evaluated 18 performance indicators across five main categories: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry income.
